Ancient Building Serving the Community
St Mary’s Church, Bexwell, near Downham Market, is a community church dedicated to “exploring church and faith in creative, modern and adventurous ways.”
They say: “We believe that Christ expects us to explore what community is and how we can support one another in a relevant and helpful manner. The church building has been here since 900AD and has seen the world change in many ways. We want to use the building and to also use modern technology to encourage our community.”
Members of the community regularly feast together at their monthly Winter Soup Evenings and Annual Bexwell Feast; and they actively seek to hold other enjoyable times to meet together. During the pandemic, they started monthly online services which proved so popular that they committed to continuing them.
On June 2nd, for instance, they offered their online interpretation of Compline – one of the oldest services in the Western world. The traditional text of the service was interspersed with recordings of music from the Western sacred tradition, interpreted by leading ensembles.
